Common questions

How many boxes of LVP for a 12×12 room?

144 sq ft plus 10% waste = 158 sq ft. At the typical 24 sq ft carton that is 7 boxes. Check your product's actual carton coverage — LVP runs 20-30 sq ft per box and the number varies by brand and plank length.

How much waste should I add for LVP?

10% for a straight lay in a rectangular room. Add up to 15% for: diagonal installations, rooms with many closets/alcoves, herringbone patterns, or if you are a first-timer (mistake allowance is real). Plank direction changes between rooms also eat material at transitions.

Does LVP need underlayment?

Most modern LVP has pre-attached padding — nothing more needed over flat subfloor. Bare-back LVP wants a thin foam underlayment ($0.30-0.60/sq ft). Over concrete, use a moisture-barrier underlayment regardless; LVP is waterproof from above, but slab moisture attacks from below.

How long does LVP need to acclimate?

48 hours in the installation room, boxes open or opened ends, HVAC running at normal living temperature. LVP is dimensional-stable (much less than laminate), but skipping acclimation in a cold garage-to-house or new-construction install causes gapping at joints later. Check the manufacturer — some certify 24h, some require 48-72h for warranty.

Can LVP go over existing flooring?

Over hard flat surfaces — tile, sheet vinyl, old hardwood in good shape — yes, up to the thickness limits of transitions. Over carpet, never. The real gate is flatness: dips over 3/16 inch in 10 ft telegraph through the plank and crack joints, so self-level the low spots first.
