Paver Calculator
How many pavers for that patio, walkway, or driveway?
How this is calculated
- Area = length × width
- Paver footprint = (width ÷ 12) × (length ÷ 12) in sq ft
- Exact count = area ÷ footprint
- Buy = ⌈exact × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)⌉ — keep leftovers; dye lots change
Common questions
How many 12×12 pavers do I need for 100 sq ft?
A 12 × 12 paver covers exactly 1 sq ft, so 100 pavers — 110 with the standard 10% cutting allowance. Square footage per pallet varies (typically 100-120 sq ft for 12×12 concrete), so buy by the pallet and you are covered.
How many 4×8 brick pavers per square foot?
A 4 × 8 paver covers 1/3 sq ft — 4.5 pavers per sq ft (plus ~10% for cuts). A 10 × 10 patio is about 495 brick pavers. Sold in bundles of ~100-120, usually priced per pallet covering 100-130 sq ft.
How much waste should I add for herringbone or circular patterns?
15% minimum — diagonal cuts at edges, broken corners, and the sacrificial pavers for curves add up fast. Straight running-bond grids stay at 10%. If your pattern mixes paver sizes (like a basket weave with border), do each zone separately and add 5% extra overall for pattern alignment.
What goes under the pavers?
The sandwich, bottom-up: compacted native soil → geotextile fabric → 4-6 inches compacted #57 crushed stone (driveways) or 4 inches (patios) → 1 inch screeded concrete sand → pavers → polymeric sand swept into joints. Our crushed stone and sand calculators size the middle layers.
Concrete, brick, or porcelain pavers?
Concrete pavers: cheap ($2-8/sq ft), huge choice, 50-year lifespan — the default. Brick: timeless look, pricier per sq ft, fragile under heavy loads. Porcelain: gorgeous and stain-proof but expensive and slippery-when-wet unless textured; needs professional-grade base work. Driveways: concrete interlocking 8×8 or 6×9 at 80mm thickness.
