How this is calculated

  1. Volume = length × width × (depth ÷ 12) in cubic feet
  2. Cubic yards = volume ÷ 27, plus the allowance
  3. The thin depth is the point: topdressing feeds and levels without burying the grass crown

Common questions

How much soil do I need to topdress my lawn?

A 50 × 50 lawn at a true quarter-inch dressing takes 52 cu ft — about 2.12 cubic yards with the 10% allowance. At half an inch it doubles to ~4.2 yards. Most homeowners over-order and end up with a pile; thin passes, watered in, beat one thick smothering coat.

How thick should lawn topdressing be?

0.25-0.5 inch for general topdressing — the grass blades must still see daylight or you smother the crown and kill the turf you are trying to improve. For leveling pronounced low spots, fill them individually (up to 1-2 in on fescue/rye which tolerates burial better than warm-season grasses) and let the lawn grow through for weeks between lifts.

What is the best material for topdressing?

A sand/compost blend for lawns on clay or compacted soil (drainage + organic matter); straight compost for nutrient-poor sandy lawns; straight sand ONLY for pure-sand lawns — sand on clay creates a layered mess that holds water at the wrong depth. Screened material matters: chunks wreck the mowing experience for a year.

When should I topdress a lawn?

During active growth: fall for cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass — also the best overseeding window), early summer for warm-season (bermuda, zoysia). Pair with core aeration first so the dressing falls into the plug holes, and overseed at the same time — the dressing is the perfect seedbed.

Do I need to aerate before topdressing?

It is the difference between dressing the surface and actually improving soil. Core aeration pulls plugs; the topdressing filters into those holes and into the root zone. Without it, a quarter inch sits on top and mostly washes or blows away before it integrates.
