How many pallets or rolls of sod does your lawn need?

Longest side of the lawn area.
Shortest side of the lawn area.
Curves, borders, and irregular shapes waste sod — 10% covers most lawns.
US pallets hold 400–500 sq ft; 450 is the common convention. Ask your supplier for theirs.
Sod typically runs $0.30–$0.80 per sq ft; a 450 sq ft pallet lands around $150–$450.

How this is calculated

  1. Lawn area = length × width
  2. Order amount = lawn area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
  3. Pallets = ⌈order amount ÷ pallet size⌉ — US pallets conventionally hold ~450 sq ft.
  4. Rolls = ⌈order amount ÷ 10⌉ — a standard sod roll is a 2 ft × 5 ft slab.

Common questions

How much does one pallet of sod cover?

Most US pallets cover 450 square feet (some suppliers use 400 or 500 — always confirm). A 20 ft × 20 ft lawn is 400 sq ft, so one 450 sq ft pallet covers it with a small margin left for trimming.

How do I calculate sod for an irregular lawn?

Break the lawn into rectangles and circles, measure each, and add the areas. Then apply 5–10% extra for cutting waste. For curved borders the 10% default is a good rule; tight curves and circles can eat 15%.

How many rolls of sod are in a pallet?

A standard roll is 2 ft × 5 ft = 10 sq ft, so a 450 sq ft pallet carries about 45 rolls. Suppliers also sell big rolls (~500–700 sq ft each) that need a special installer — those are for large, flat projects.

Should I add extra sod for waste?

Yes — order 10% over your measured area for a typical lawn, 15% for curved or irregular shapes. Sod is perishable (it should be installed within 24–48 hours of cutting), so you cannot easily "go back for more" mid-job, but large leftovers are money thrown out.
